The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has filed tax evasion cases against 23 companies and 73 individuals for allegedly using fake or “ghost” receipts to avoid paying taxes.

BIR Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr. filed the complaints on Thursday at the Department of Justice. According to him, the cases involve 23 corporations, 56 corporate officers, and 17 accountants.

The accused are from various industries, including construction, food, retail, electronics, and entertainment. The scheme reportedly caused the government to lose about P1.41 billion in tax revenues.

The charges filed include tax evasion, perjury, and falsification of information.
