In a bizarre heist gone wrong, a group of thieves in Peru stole 220 pieces of sneakers — all of them right-foot shoes.

The break-in happened around 3:00 a.m. on April 30 at the Sbshop sports goods store in Huancayo, central Peru. According to police, three unidentified men used a bolt cutter to break the padlock and ransacked the shop.

The suspects loaded three large crates filled with branded rubber shoes into their getaway vehicle. What they failed to realize, however, was that each box contained only the right shoe of each pair. The items were intended as display pieces for an upcoming sports goods fair.

Police chief Eduan Diaz said investigators are already closing in on the suspects after finding fingerprints left at the crime scene.

The stolen shoes are valued at more than $13,000. Meanwhile, the store owner is left with 220 useless left shoes and is hoping authorities can recover the stolen goods.

Police continue to urge the public to report any attempts to sell mismatched or single shoes in the area.
