Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has called on local government units (LGUs) to strengthen fire prevention measures as the country approaches the summer season, when the risk of fire incidents significantly increases.

The appeal follows a massive fire that broke out on February 3 in Barangay Lamion in Bongao, located in Tawi-Tawi. According to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, the blaze spread rapidly due to highly flammable materials and strong winds in the densely populated coastal community.

Authorities reported that an estimated 1,404 families were left homeless by the incident. Damage to private property reached approximately ₱17.5 million, while losses to public infrastructure were estimated at ₱18 million.

Gatchalian emphasized that many fire incidents are preventable, noting that overloaded electrical circuits and illegal power connections are among the most common causes.

He urged stricter enforcement against unauthorized electrical hookups and called for proper handling and storage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to reduce fire hazards.

“Simple but consistent safety practices can save lives and protect livelihoods,” the senator said.

Gatchalian also encouraged LGUs to intensify information campaigns and conduct community-based fire drills, particularly in areas where houses are built close together, to better prepare residents and minimize potential damage during fire emergencies.
