At the opening of the confirmation of charges hearing before the International Criminal Court (ICC), defense lawyer Atty. Nicholas Kaufman described former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte as “a unique phenomenon.”
Kaufman made the remark during his opening statement in the ICC proceedings concerning the crimes against humanity charges filed against Duterte. The former president is facing allegations related to his administration’s controversial anti-drug campaign.
In his statement, Kaufman also drew comparisons between Duterte and incumbent President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. He accused the current administration of playing a role in Duterte’s arrest and detention under the ICC process.
