PILAR, CAPIZ- The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Capiz passed a resolution declaring the newly discovered “Tucad Reef” in Pilar as a “Protected Marine Sanctuary.”

In an interview with Bombo Radyo, Mr. Ronald Allan F. Cullo, Head of the Capiz Environment and Natural Resources Office (CapENRO), stated that during the session held at the Capiz Provincial Capitol, he presented the importance of the reef’s discovery after years of studies and examinations.

He explained that the rich marine life of the area was first discovered in 1997, but it was necessary to ensure that the data was accurate before announcing it to the public.

Cullo also highlighted that the protection of the reef is part of the Executive Legislative Agenda of Governor Fredenil Castro. This agenda aims to protect the province’s natural resources, including the establishment of three “marine protected areas” — Tucad Reef in Pilar, Napti Island surrounding Panay, and Sapian Bay. These projects are part of the ongoing initiative by the administration to protect biodiversity.

It was noted that the discovery of the reef’s natural resources prompted CapENRO to take action to ensure its protection.
