In Manila, a graduation photo of a teacher and his mother has captured the attention of many online, not only for its warmth but also for the story behind it.
Kim Lavapie Magno, 32, recently completed his Master of Arts in Education major in English after nearly a decade of hard work. Instead of posing alone for his graduation portrait, he chose to be photographed beside his mother, Rosita Lavapie, a longtime balut vendor and single parent who raised her three children despite illness and poverty.
The photo, showing Magno in a black toga standing proudly next to his mother, symbolizes years of sacrifice, perseverance, and faith. For Rosita, who spent decades selling balut in the streets of Tondo and Intramuros to support her family, the picture represents more than just a son’s academic achievement—it reflects the triumph of an entire household.
Magno’s journey was not easy. He began his master’s studies in 2016, passed exams and defenses, but faced delays due to thesis revisions and discouragement. After being motivated by mentors and family, he finally completed his requirements in 2024 and graduated this year.
Beyond the diploma, the creative photo with his mother was the milestone he had long envisioned. For him, it was a tribute to the woman who carried the family through hardship, kept faith during their darkest days, and inspired him to keep moving forward.
Today, Magno works as a Master Teacher at Doña Teodora Alonzo High School in Manila. His story continues to inspire many students who, like him, struggle with setbacks in their studies but hope to one day achieve their dreams.
For Magno and his family, the graduation picture is more than a keepsake—it is a lasting reminder that perseverance, sacrifice, and love can turn hardship into victory.
