The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) announced that Mike Phillips has been officially classified as a local player by FIBA, allowing him to compete for Gilas Pilipinas in all FIBA tournaments without any restrictions. The news was revealed on Saturday, confirming that the former La Salle standout is now eligible to represent the Philippines in international competitions.
Phillips expressed his gratitude, saying, “It’s a blessing and a huge honor to officially be eligible to represent the Philippines. Playing for the national team has always been a dream and an answered prayer! I’m incredibly thankful to FIBA, the SBP, and everyone who supported me through this process.” He added, “I am ready to fight for our country! I will give my all and my heart. I can’t wait to compete with my fellow Filipinos and help move Philippine basketball forward.”
Phillips has previously suited up for Gilas Pilipinas, notably helping the team win the gold medal at the 2023 Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia. He also played a key role in La Salle’s triumphs, winning the UAAP Season 86 title and later steering the Green Archers to a Season 88 championship.
Though he was initially listed for the Southeast Asian Games last year, changes in eligibility rules prevented him from participating, coinciding with La Salle’s UAAP campaign.
SBP has not yet confirmed whether Phillips will be included in the Gilas pool for the upcoming FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, where the team will face New Zealand on February 26 and Australia on March 1.
