The prosecution’s evidence presented during the first day of the International Criminal Court (ICC) hearing is strong enough to convict former President Rodrigo Duterte, according to former ICC Judge Raul Pangalangan.
Pangalangan, who also served as dean of the U.P. College of Law, noted that the prosecution highlighted specific details of the alleged crimes, including video clips of Duterte making controversial statements and admitting to certain killings during his anti-drug campaign.
He added that the prosecution may still be preparing its strongest evidence for the trial proper, should the case advance beyond the confirmation stage. Senior trial lawyer Julian Nicholls echoed this, saying the panel’s evidence is sufficient to secure a conviction if the judges decide to proceed with a full trial.
