On the 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution, Cebu Archbishop Alberto Uy urged Cebuanos to set aside political colors and intensify collective efforts for the country’s common good.

In his homily during the solemn mass at the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu, Archbishop Uy said the EDSA uprising taught that power has limits, abusers will be held accountable in due time, and that a nation’s true strength comes not from arms but from the moral courage of its people.

“Even after four decades, the message of EDSA remains relevant,” Uy said, noting that the freedoms of many continue to be at risk amid ongoing challenges of poverty, corruption, and systems that favor only a few.

The Archbishop emphasized the need for accountability in governance, a just system of justice, and careful selection of leaders. He also highlighted the role of patronage politics and political dynasties in perpetuating corruption.

Uy encouraged the faithful to live out their beliefs through concrete actions, including rejecting bribery and vote-buying, avoiding illegal activities, and actively caring for the environment.

For Archbishop Uy, commemorating EDSA is not just a remembrance of the past but a conscious choice about the kind of nation to build and the legacy to leave for future generations.
