SIBALOM, ANTIQUE — Over 300 students from Pis-anan National High School in Barangay Pis-anan were hospitalized on Wednesday morning, July 2, 2025, after experiencing symptoms of exposure to a “chemical-like” odor. Authorities suspect the fumes may have come from a nearby insecticide spray, though the exact source remains under investigation.

The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m., with more than 50 students initially reporting symptoms such as dizziness, chest pain, difficulty breathing, and fainting. The situation quickly escalated, affecting both the high school and the nearby Pis-anan Central Elementary School, sparking panic among parents and school staff.

By the time local authorities responded, a total of 323 students were affected, with 209 students treated at Ramon Maza Sr. District Hospital and 82 at the local triage center. One student was admitted to Angel Salazar Memorial General Hospital for further care.

The quick response of local emergency teams has been praised by officials.

“The community mobilized swiftly, and our priority is ensuring the students are safe and receiving the care they need,” said a representative from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO). “The Emergency Operations Center is on high alert, and our focus now is on determining the cause of this chemical exposure.”

While the source of the fumes remains uncertain, officials suspect a nearby insecticide spray used by local authorities may be linked to the incident. The Department of Education (DepEd) in Antique is working closely with health and emergency services to investigate the cause. The Department of Health (DOH) and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) have also been called in for support.

In response to the crisis, both schools have switched to modular distance learning, allowing authorities to assess the situation, conduct decontamination efforts, and ensure that the facilities are safe for the students. Psychosocial support services are being provided to affected students and their families.

“We commend the fast actions of our teachers, school staff, local emergency units, and healthcare providers,” said the Schools Division Office of Antique. “Their quick thinking and response undoubtedly prevented the situation from worsening.”

As investigations continue, the focus remains on preventing further incidents and ensuring the safety of the students and the community. Local officials have promised to provide updates as more information becomes available.
