Former Magdalo party-list representative Gary Alejano believes that Vice President Sara Duterte’s early announcement of her candidacy for the 2028 presidential elections was a deliberate move to protect herself from pending impeachment complaints.

Alejano said that by declaring her intention to run for president, Duterte could create a political shield against accusations filed against her, noting that Congress, and eventually the Senate, might hesitate to proceed with impeachment once her candidacy becomes official.

“This strategy is not new in politics,” Alejano explained, “but it is unusual for the Dutertes, who seem to be taking extra steps to secure their success while also sending a warning to their critics.”
