Vice President Sara Duterte expressed concern that the public, particularly event organizers, may have forgotten the true meaning of the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, which ended the 20-year rule of the late President Ferdinand Marcos Sr.

The Vice President made the remarks during an interview in Iligan City regarding her message for the 40th anniversary of the EDSA Revolution.

According to Duterte, those organizing the anniversary commemorations today “do not truly understand” the message for the Filipino people and seem to have lost sight of the original purpose of People Power.

Her statement comes as protests are being held to coincide with the historic anniversary of the EDSA Revolution.

Civil society groups and the Catholic Church are leading the commemorations, including a march from the EDSA Shrine to the EDSA People Power Monument. Simultaneously, the third “Trillion Peso March” is taking place, calling for accountability over alleged corruption in infrastructure projects, while some groups are also demanding justice for the Marcos and Duterte families.
